Whether you’ve used our services in the past, or considering your first foray into the world of custom kitchen cabinetry, it’s always good to familiarize yourself with the design process. Our streamlined, 5-step design process ensures we get your dream kitchen right… the first time! ;)
Here’s what you can expect when you work with us!
5 Steps to Perfect Custom Kitchen Cabinetry
Step One: Initial Consultation
We begin with a meeting at our Toronto or Newmarket Showroom. During this consultation, we ask that you bring in some rough measurements, inspiration pictures (hello Pinterest!), a budget, and any key information that we should know about; ie. Have you already picked out your flooring? Appliances etc.? These are things we need to know!
The initial consultation is our chance to get to know you, your tastes and most importantly… how you actually use your kitchen! The consultation is key because it will give us the information we need to create a kitchen that functions best for you and your family. Are you an avid home chef? Or more of an entertainer? Or both?! Fleshing out these details is crucial to our design process, and ensures that YOU receive a kitchen tailored exclusively to your lifestyle. This consultation also allows us to determine what’s possible within your budget and space! Very important stuff!
Approximate Duration: 45 minutes-1 hour
Step Two: The Estimate
Our designers will then prepare an estimate, taking your needs, wants, taste and budget into consideration. Upon presentation of the estimate, you will be invited back to our Toronto or Newmarket Showroom where your designer will present an array of design options that work within your budget. This will give you the opportunity to see, touch and feel the different materials that will potentially be used in your kitchen! For instance, you’ll get a first-hand look at the difference between various types of wood and cabinet styles.
Approximate Duration: One – Two weeks to prepare the estimate
Step Three: The Drawings and Floor Plan
Once the estimate has been approved and you reserve your spot in our drafting schedule with a retainer or deposit (congratulations!), it’s time to really get the ball rolling! Your Bloomsbury Designer will come to your home to take detailed measurements! This is when it starts to feel ** real **.
The initial onsite visit allows our designers to get a better feel for the space and will give them the chance to take exact measurements... crucial for this step! It’s based on these measurements that our Bloomsbury designers are able to draw up your dream kitchen!
Upon completion of the drawings, we will present them to you in one of our two showrooms. It’s during this third step where you’ll see how crucial the initial consultation is to catching your kitchen needs effectively and efficiently. By fleshing out those major details earlier on, this third stage allows us to work on more minute details and detailed, inside accessories. This is the wonderful advantage to working one-on-one with a Bloomsbury Designer through each of the five steps… miscommunication simply doesn’t happen! We’re able to effectively capture your needs down to the very last drawer insert! ;)
If changes are required to work out minor detailing changes, up to two revisions are included! However, by following our signature process, most clients find they only need 1-2 minor revisions because of how effectively we captured their wants & needs during the discovery process. And if you need a few more revisions, no problem! We will work on as many additional drawing revisions as required to get the design to where you need it to be… this is your dream kitchen after all!
It’s during this drawing stage, where you’ll sign off on the plans, including colour, fixtures, and other decorative hardware elements!
Approximate Duration: Two weeks to prepare each set of drawings
Step Four: Production
** It’s all happening! **
9 weeks out from delivery:
One of our extremely talented shop engineers will contact you to set-up another on-site visit. It’s during this time that an installation engineer will come to take final measurements of your kitchen to ensure the cabinets are a perfect fit.
Upon final measurements and receiving a deposit, we can officially begin production. You’ll receive a guaranteed delivery date and receive some very important information about what’s required to ensure that specific timelines are met! For instance, you’ll be notified about dates that your floor needs to be installed, electrical and plumbing, drywall etc.
8 weeks out from delivery:
When all the magic happens ;).
The Bloomsbury elves are officially hard at work on your Bloomsbury Kitchen! It’s during this time that our craftsmen and craftswomen are detailing your dream custom kitchen cabinetry.
2 weeks out from delivery:
The clock is ticking, and the countdown is on!
Our team will provide you with a target delivery date. Your installation manager will be in touch with you to confirm delivery day and to ensure the date works with your job site. What does this mean exactly? That your job site is ready for the installation requirements. This means that your floor needs to be installed, electrical and plumbing in place, dry wall on and primed and finished with two coats of paint.
What’s happening back at the workshop? Your kitchen is likely receiving a hand-brushed finish! All of our custom kitchen cabinetry is painted in-house, which gives our team full control of delivery date. Most kitchen companies paint the cabinets once the kitchen has already been installed… which can increase the installation stage by 1-3 months!
Luckily for you, you’ve chosen Bloomsbury ;)
Approximate Duration: 9 weeks
Step Five: Kitchen Installation
The day has finally arrived… and here’s how it will ALL go down!
Day 1-5:
Our in-house installation crew will deliver, unload and officially start the kitchen cabinetry and installation process.
Day 6-20:
Countertop fabricators will take precise laser measurements of the space for your countertops! It takes approximately two weeks for your countertops to be fabricated and installed!
Day 21-31:
Once your countertops are in… it’s time for the backsplash!
The timeline for your backsplash is going to vary depending on the material you choose! Tile can be installed immediately, however stone will need to be measured, fabricated and installed – which can take up to two weeks!
Bonus Step: Complimentary Check-In
We would never leave you without a little something extra, now would we?
Our team offers a complimentary 6 month check-in for qualifying projects. Because our craftsmen use real, solid wood for our custom kitchen cabinetry it’s natural that materials settle. So if alignments or adjustments are required… simply give your Bloomsbury Designer a call and we will make those adjustments for you!
