Selecting the right flooring for your white kitchen cabinets will help create the overall aesthetic or tone that you want your kitchen to emulate. If you’re looking to build a custom white kitchen, knowing the fundamentals of kitchen flooring makes a world of a difference when designing your dream space. Kitchen flooring can be overwhelming, so we’re going to walk you through the different types of flooring that will make your white kitchen stand out while simultaneously adhering to the overall style of your kitchen.
3 Types of Flooring For White Kitchens
Hardwood
Hardwood is one of the most versatile materials for custom kitchens! There are a wide variety of shades, tree species, grains and finishes to help you achieve the style and overall mood or tone of your kitchen. Whether you’re looking for a rustic farmhouse design, sleek contemporary or elegant traditional… there's a type of hardwood for that!
Extremely light or dark flooring is perfect for modern spaces. Why the two extremes? Very dark floors will add contrast to a modern kitchen’s monochrome style, while very light floors will help feed into it, creating a space that’s wholly cohesive. Medium tone hardwood floors are warmer and more suitable for traditional styles, while floors with prominent graining and variation like hickory, maple and walnut are suitable for rustic spaces.
The downside? Hardwood floors are a little more high maintenance and require consistent humidity levels to be kept in the home to prevent boards from moving . They require careful cleaning with gentle cleaners to retain their original luster and feel, so this may not be the best option for those who want a low-maintenance kitchen.
Tiles
Blending form and function, tiles are one of the more popular flooring choices for custom kitchens. Believe it or not, tiles offer an even wider variety of designs and styles to match your custom white kitchen cabinets. Colourful, patterned, monochromatic… the options are truly endless! It all depends on what type of design style you’re looking to achieve.
You’ve likely seen the black and white checkered floor floating around Instagram, and although it may seem like it’s having a serious moment right now… this floor design is rooted in tradition and has been around for hundreds of years. If you’re coveting a traditional space, stick to the black and white checkered scheme, but if you’re looking to give this trend a modern refresh opt for a gray and white checkered pattern.
Natural stone or the new extra durable porcelains in an all-white or off-white finish is another great option for white kitchens - more on that below! This light, airy palette can work for both modern and traditional spaces. Finally… If you’re looking to go ultra-modern, opt for tile floors that are laid diagonally as opposed to perpendicular to add some oomph and personality to your space.
Tiles are easier to maintain and are more durable than wood… so opt for tiles if you prefer a low-maintenance kitchen! The downside? Grout buildup can present a problem with tiles, but it can be easily addressed with regular cleaning and maintenance.
Large Format Stone
Large format tile and stone is a pretty new trend in flooring. If you are looking for a more seamless look of extra large tile or custom cut slabs these can be 24 x 48”, 36 x 36 or any size really! There are a number of ready-made options in these extra large sizes currently on the market, made of natural stones like marble and granite, or solid surface materials such as quartz, or porcelain. The tiles can be used for both floors and walls and have a variety of options in sizes available.
One thing you need to be aware of for installation of these larger sizes is that a very flat substrate is necessary, otherwise you may risk cracking! These larger tiles add a modern look to interiors as their size allows them to cover a larger area with minimum of joints, creating a more sleek and seamless look.
Another large factor to consider when opting for large format tile is your budget, as these tiles are one of the more expensive flooring materials on the market both to buy and install. So if you’re looking for a more affordable option, these may not be your best choice.
