If you’re looking for a kitchen that oozes character and self-expression, choosing the right colour scheme is nothing short of imperative. The palette you select has the power to completely transform your space and give your kitchen a completely new feel and vibe. Now we’re not saying that the days of the “all-white kitchen” are a thing of the past... but 2020 is packing a colourful punch and we are absolutely loving it! This year, it’s all about darker, more sophisticated tones on your cabinets or walls that contrast with brighter, lighter parts of the room.
Let’s take a look at three of our personal favourite bold colour choices for kitchen cabinets this year!
2020 Kitchen Cabinetry Colour Trends
Hague Blue
Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue paint colour is nothing short of divine. This rich, deep, dark blue is understated and incredibly sophisticated.
Fun fact: this particular paint gets its name from a Dutch town where this handsome colour is traditionally used on walls and accent features in people’s homes.
Leveraging this colour palette will give your kitchen space dimension and depth. For instance, we utilized this colour palette for our Westwinds Project to expand and anchor the kitchen. Lighter colours along the perimeter of the room were utilized to give the illusion of a more open, expanded space, while the hague blue painted island anchors the space. When it comes to design… colour is a miracle worker!
Our English Farmhouse Project also features Farrow & Ball Hague Blue kitchen cabinetry in signature hand brush finish.
Minster Green
Another Farrow & Ball classic! Minster Green is a lovely, sage-y, forest-y tone that’s reminiscent of English country homes and idyllic countryside walks through the woods. In fact, the colour was originally inspired by the sunny woodland of Dorset. This colour is the perfect deep tone that exudes feelings of both comfort and sophistication- the perfect combination for any kitchen!
We absolutely adore the look of minster green on the cabinetry. As evident from our Minster Kitchen Project, this kitchen cabinetry colour pairs strikingly with veined Arabescato Corchia marble countertops and tarnished brass or copper hardware. If you want to give your kitchen a warm, welcoming, yet handsomely moody make-over, this colour is definitely one to consider.
Black
Nothing screams “bold drama” like a sleek, black painted kitchen. Many people are wedded to the idea of bright, white walls. Our thoughts? Black cabinetry is a classic yet brave, and exciting move that’s clean, crisp and exudes contemporary luxury. Inky black walls or woodwork makes for a chic statement…. Plus, the dramatic colour is sure to highlight your kitchen’s best features.
The colour on the above kitchen cabinets is one of Farrow & Ball's original colours called Off Black. It's a soft, milder black with blue undertones.
Another favourite shade of black? Benjamin Moore Onyx! We used this colour for our National Home Show Display Kitchen this year. This black is much more pure, saturated and deep... yet equally as striking!
Bloomsbury Tip: Black kitchens can at times feel muted and monochromatic so try to play with contrast! For instance, you could offset black walls and cabinets with white countertops or even a light coloured ceiling. You can also leverage the room’s natural light by removing any blinds or curtains.
