Thinking of redesigning your kitchen? You’re in for an exciting time… trust us, we’re the experts! When you first decide to redo your kitchen, it can be hard to know exactly where to start. While you may have some ideas about finishings, styles, and colours, it’s impossible to know how everything will tie together in your space. This is where mood boards come into play (and experienced designers like us too!). Kitchen mood boards help create a sense of whether your design choices actually look good together. Want to create a DIY kitchen mood board at home? Here is a simple guide that anyone can follow!
What is a kitchen mood board?
First things, first… what is a kitchen mood board? Simply put, it’s a visual representation of pieces, textures, colours or prints that inspire you. They’re essentially a collage of qualities and characteristics that you want to see in your future kitchen.
Start with your essentials then move onto extra features
Begin by pinpointing the essential items you’ll need for your kitchen. Think big-ticket items that are necessary in any kitchen such as cabinetry, countertops, appliances, light fixtures, and so on. Browse design blogs or your favourite magazines (we love House & Home and this month, you can check out their tips on Mood Boards too!) for these big-ticket items and see what you’re most drawn to, style and function wise. Decide which items are going to be important features in the room, and which are going to be a little more superfluous. This will help narrow down a general theme and style.
Choose a colour scheme
Once you’ve picked a few big-ticket items that you love, start to think about a possible colour scheme for your room. If you don’t have a specific palette in mind, try scrolling Instagram for images of completed kitchens for inspiration…. Hello #designinspo! You may initially think that an all-white kitchen is what you’re after — but upon exploring other options, you may swoon for super sophisticated, refined colours, such as a minster green, crisp black, hague blue… The options are endless! Have you ever thought about wallpaper?! It’s making a serious comeback.
Collect images that show textures and styles
As you continue to collect inspirational images of items you want featured in your new kitchen, be sure to think about textures and styles. For instance, granite countertops will have a very different textural quality to sleek white marble. Similarly, a classic handmade Lacanche range can look very contemporary when placed next to modern, clean-lined cabinetry.Think about contrasting textures and styles, and try different looks on your mood board to see what works…. And what doesn’t!
Use digital software to organize your ideas — or go old school with home magazines!
When it comes to organizing your ideas, you can either choose to use online software or opt to go old-school and cut out images of home decor magazines. It all depends on what method works best for you! Using an online platform like Pinterest will give you the chance to collect and save images and products from all over the internet… and you can even create several boards. For instance, you’re able to create one board for each potential look you’re toying with, then compare and contrast these boards to make the final, “Pinterest-Perfect” decision.
